When Jesus Comes Along Side

Lester Wiles was an accomplished piano tuner. On a pleasant day in August 1974, he was making his usual "tuning loop", as he called this particular highway route. For several years it had been his habit to visit the churches along this network of roads, once a year, to keep their pianos tuned to their optimum.

However, for this trip, Lester wanted to take my 12 year old son along with him, not only for company, but to also encourage him spiritually. Little did my friend know God would use him on this particular day to direct my son onto the road leading to a closer walk with his Lord.

Even in various homes, Lester was able to use his God-given talent as a means of witnessing. After having finished tuning, he would proceed to play a couple soul stirring hymns and depart after having spoken few well chosen words. About noon the two stopped at a Furr's Cafeteria for lunch. As is normal with Furr's, Lester and his youthful guest selected their food, and were given a guest check to pay as leaving after having finished dining.

While eating, Lester suddenly became aware that he had neither his check book nor his billfold. Leaning forward, he whispered to my son, "We need to pray for a miracle for provision to pay for our meals", and explained the problem. They proceeded with their eating and talking as though all was normal.  After a dining and fellowship, the two shuffled their way to the cashier. They were the third party from the cashier when a stranger came up along side Lester and calmly said, "Sir, I am paying for the guest checks for you and your friend." Needless to say, both Lester and my son's jaw dropped open, astonished! The stranger proceeded to explain, "You see, I am an atheist and my friend here (gesturing) is a Christian, and gives thanks for all his meals, no matter where he is. I ridiculed him telling him he is being silly, as no one in their right mind prays in public like this. Well, he wagered me, saying if no one we saw in here visibly gave thanks for their food, then he would pay for my lunch. But, if some one did, then I would pay for their meals. I accepted the wager and lost. So I am here to pay the guest checks for your meals."

This real life experience is a prime example of what God did for Israel at various times throughout the Old Testament. God came along side Moses and saw him and the Israelites through the wilderness and across the Red Sea. God came along side Joshua and saw the Israelites into the Promise Land. God came along side Solomon who ruled Israel as their wisest king. This is what Jesus did for His people, those who accepted Him as their Lord and Savior, on the cross of Calvary. Jesus paid a price that no human is able to pay. From the day a man, woman or child accepts Christ as Savior, God sees them through the atoning blood of His Son Jesus.

Yes, God loved the world so much that He sent Jesus, as the Lamb of God, that takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29), to come along side those who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior. This is the reason we can sing –

“Jesus is all the world to me, My life, my joy, my all,

He is my strength from day to day,

Without Him I would fall.”

Thank you God for sending Jesus to come along our side. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak! (Mark 14:38b).
