Time For National Reflection

For the past several days I have been looking back at American history seeing where we came from, where we have been and where we are going.

I am proud of those brave souls who rode the Mayflower from Europe to start a new way of life and a new system of government in an unknown land. For them to tell the king of England, “We will no longer bow to you; we want to worship God after the dictates of our own hearts”, took courage and a defying spirit! We are at a time in history where courage and a new spirit is essential to the well-being of America and the Church.

God has always held a high standard for those chosen to lead His people. Look at Moses who was a man who intended to take the Israelites directly into the Promised Land. He sent  in 12 spies to feel out the land. Because 10 of them said “We cannot” the people refused to enter. However, the two who said, “With God we can”, were the only ones who lived to enter the Land of Promise.

For decades America has had men who have said, “With God we will prevail”. Too many people in Congress do not  have God in the front of their thinking. The time is now for us to turn our nation back to God.

GEORGE WASHINGTON, 1789, Inaugural Address – “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained.”

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, 1787, Constitutional Convention“I therefore beg leave to move that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessing on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning . . . “

THOMAS JEFFERSON, 1781, Note on the State of Virginia – “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever.”

ABRAHAM LINCOLN, 1863, Proclamation of National Fast – “It behooves us then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins and pray for clemency and forgiveness . . . . “

CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA May 1854, passed a resolution in the House which declared:

“The great vital and conservative element of our system is the believe of our people in the pure doctrines and Divine truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord . . . “Psalm 33:12 - KJV

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” Proverbs 14:12 - KJV

“. . . except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” Psalm 127:1 - KJV

It is my prayer that as American citizens go to the Ballot Box Tuesday, November 2, that we take this our sacred duty to cast our vote with our hearts and our Bibles, not with our bank accounts. May we all have the safety and well being of our nation at heart and not our personal well-being.  As goes the church so goes the nation.
