THE SON OF MAN ASCENDS TO THE ANCIENT OF DAYS

“. . . HE WAS TAKEN UP, AND A CLOUD RECEIVED HIM OUT OF THEIR SIGHT . . .

” Acts 1:9 (NKJV)

It is now the 40th day since Christ’s resurrection. He is standing with disciples on a hill outside of Jerusalem. They ask again that question they have been pondering and asking for the past three years:

“. . . LORD, WILL YOU AT THIS TIME RESTORE THE KINGDOM TO ISRAEL? . . .”

Acts 1:6 (NKJV)

About 43 days earlier the disciple’s hearts had sank in despair as they saw their Master taken captive, beaten and crucified between two thieves, as they cowardly fled in fear. But, against all human odds, they now have seen Him raised victoriously from the grave. No doubt beads of sweat is breaking out on their brow, hearts racing with intense excitement, they again present the question He has heard so many times before. How wisely kind is His answer! No rebuke for dullness. Our Lord intimates that there shall indeed be a restoration, though not in the way,  nor with the results they imagined. Christ continued with:

“. . . IT IS NOT FOR YOU TO KNOW TIMES OR SEASONS . . .  BUT YOU SHALL RECEIVE POWER

WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT IS COME UPON YOU; AND YOU SHALL BE WITNESSES TO

ME . . . . TO THE END OF THE EARTH”. Acts 1:7, 8 (NKJV)

The ascension of Christ is the great pledge and “earnest deposit”, if I may use that expression, of our eternal state; that our nature is forever identified with His, so that as long as He is Man we must be happy, as one with Him. We are forever blended with Christ – His property – His purchased possession – the very members of His body. He has not hesitated to wear that form that Adam wore, into that Holy of Holies where the angels tremble as they gaze. What should our feelings be as we reflect upon this astonishing transit?

This crowning event was foretold by the prophet Daniel:

“I WAS WATCHING IN THE NIGHT VISIONS, AND BEHOLD, ONE LIKE

THE SON OF MAN, COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN! HE

CAME TO THE ANCIENT OF DAYS” Daniel 7:13 (NKJV)

Entering heaven as the glorified King, the final demonstration of His Messiahship is complete. As the Messiah stretched out his arms in blessing, He ascended to the Ancient of Days. The disciples were to be in constant prayer and praise during the ten days from the ascension to Pentecost, in preparation for the greatest campaign of the ages.
