Because Jehovah God has no beginning and no ending, the best brief phrase to describe Him is simply, "I AM". Since, with God there is neither past nor future, He can only be spoken of as an "ETERNAL PRESENCE". Hence, when Moses asked God what he was to say when asked who sent him, he was told, ". . . thus you shall say . . . . I AM has sent me . . . " Exodus 3:14 (NKJV).

In John's account of the Gospel, Jesus made absolute claim to being very God incarnate. "Jesus said to them, Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." John 8:58 (NKJV)

Repeatedly, Jesus used the eternal name of I AM. Following are a few examples. Each is from the NKJV of the Holy Bible.

John 6:35   - "I AM the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger."

John 8:12   - "I AM the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness."

John 10:9   - "I AM the door. If anyone enters by me he will be saved . . ."

John 11:25 - "I AM the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live."

John 14:6   - "I AM the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

John 15:5   - "I AM the vine, you are the branches . . ."

Rev. 1:8      - "I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, says the Lord, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."

As the Almighty One, God's power is absolute.

"Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer,

the Lord of hosts: I am the First and I am the Last;  Besides

Me there is no God."  Isaiah 44:6 (NKJV).

Jesus performed many miracles that,

". . . are written that you may believe that Jesus is the

Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have

life in His name." John 30:31 (NKJV).

Only once, as He was  being arrested, did Jesus give any hint of displaying the awesome power that was at His immediate disposal. We can read in John 18 of Judas leading a detachment of soldiers to arrest Jesus. Verse 4 reads:

"Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come

upon Him, went forward and said to them, Whom are you

In verse 5 we read,

"They answered Him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered

           them, I AM He."

It is important that the reader reads very carefully verse number 6 -

"Now when He said to them, I AM He, they drew back and

            FELL TO THE GROUND."

Casual reading of these words affords simple identification of Jesus in terms of His Galilean hometown. This explains the impact of His words on the troops, who are involuntarily smitten by this momentary unleashing of His inherent power as God.
