THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO GOD

We have all, on occasion read or heard a word that was totally unfamiliar to us. Those of us who have researched our genealogy or other documents, have had to wrestle with what certain words mean, as they are now archaic and have fallen out of use.

In the Bible, itself, some people, mostly among the younger generations, have a problem with the King James Version of the Bible. In the Old Testament, the word "kin" will be used for cows. In the New Testament, the words "wax old" will be used for "growing old." The New King James Version uses the more common words, as well as other modern English translations of the Holy Scripture.

There is always danger that a word, when used again and again, gradually loses it meaning. This can happen either unintentionally or by deliberate design. Such a word is the beloved word "Gospel," so dear to the believer's heart. A precious scripture to the Christian's heart, is I Corinthians 15:1- 4 - - "Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the Gospel . . . . that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures." NKJV.

A professor was asked for a precise definition of the Scriptural term "Gospel." His reply was, "The Biblical word 'Gospel' means good news for a bad situation." What a horrendous definition! An Anacin tablet may be good news for a person with a splitting headache, but it certainly has nothing to do with the Christian Gospel!!

No one needs to be a learned theologian to know what the Bible means by the word "Gospel." Listen closely to the apostle Paul as he writes: " . . . I declare to you the Gospel . . . that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures." And listen to the apostle Peter's clear words: " . . . you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver and gold . . . but with the precious blood of Jesus Christ . . . . now this is the Word which by the Gospel was preached to you."                        I Peter 1:18 - 25. NKJV.

Spelled out clearly and completely, the primary meaning of the word "Gospel" in the Bible is the good news that our heavenly Father sent His only Son to earth to live, to suffer, to die, and rise again as our divine Redeemer so that, through faith in Him, our sins might be forgiven and we might dwell with Him in eternal bliss and glory. That, my friends, and that alone, is the "good news" on which we base our hope.
