STRIVING FOR THE BEST

". . . I ALSO COUNT ALL THINGS LOSS FOR THE EXCELLENCE OF THE

KNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST JESUS MY LORD . . .". Phil. 3:8 (NKJV)

THE BEST SEED PRODUCES THE BEST CROP

My parents taught to me strive for excellence as a youngster when growing up on the family farm in Louisiana. To my Dad farming was more than just making a living. He strove to make his farming a thing of art. At harvest time he saved the very best of each crop as seed for next year. We had neighbors who saved the not so pretty and smallest for seed, and sale the best, to bring in more money. But, dad, saw it different, and he reaped the benefits.

In our text we find the Apostle Paul striving for the best in Jesus Christ. He sought to "finish the course" on the high road. Paul had striven all his life to achieve the highest. Paul, as Saul, saw Christianity as a threat to Judaism and the temple in Jerusalem, therefore his goal was to wipe out Christianity. That day on the way to Damascus, Saul was breathing out threatenings, having papers from the High Priests to wipe out as many Christians as he could. When Christ, with a bright light, brought Saul to his knees, Saul responded by calling Him Lord, (Acts 9:4.5) asked what he needed to do. Trembling, Saul went into Damascus, blind, waiting for Ananias to bring him the words of life. (Acts 9:10-16 NKJV).

Listen to what Paul told the Philippian Christians, "Not that I have already attained. . . . forgetting those things which are behind . . . . I press toward the prize of the upward call of God . . ." Philippians 3:12-14 NKJV).

How about us? Have we finished the course? Are we continuing to struggle with the Spirit's help, for constant improvement? Paul never gave up the struggle, nor dare we. Unswervingly the goal for our Christian life must be a quest for the best. May none of us give up that quest!
