We have seen it all too often: a massacre takes place. In recent years there have been over 20 incidents of mass shootings. Among them being the Columbine School shooting in Colorado, as well as the theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado, a temple in Wisconsin, the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut, and now, in a Naval facility in Washington, D.C.

Each incident brings out cries for more gun control laws. Some have maintained that there should be armed guards stationed in schools. I can only wonder what would be wrong with enforcing the laws that are currently on the books. When Clinton was president he signed an order that the guards on military facilities not carry guns. Now, that is tantamount to having a toothless dog guarding the hen house!! Of course, a simple signature by our current president would be all it would take to change the unarmed guards on military facilities!! But will he?

I tremble for my country when I stop to think about how far we have fallen from where we once were. All Americans, especially we who are Christian, must pray for the day our country returns to where it once was. As long as we had free access to God, America was invincible - but no longer is this the case. In 1962, Madeline Murray (later O'Hare) ranted and raved about the Bible and prayer being unconstitutional in our schools. The Supreme Court unwisely bent to her whims and started our downward slide.

America's problem on every front - schools, financial, infrastructure, government break-down, forest fires, floods, tornadoes and other upheavals in nature, is very basic and is well expressed by the Psalmist:    ". . .Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain." Psa. 127:1b (NKJV)    Also, "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." Proverbs 14:34 (NKJV)

We do not need more laws in Washington, nor the states or counties or cities. As far as laws are concerned, we need only to enforce the ones we have on the books. Allowing the villain in each of the named events, as well as future ones, face that which he is intending to dish out, is an excellent idea - thereby putting the criminal on the defense, effectively distracting him from his intended goal - killing innocent people.

However, the real debate should not be how many bullets can be put into a clip, how large a capacity a clip can be or how many guns a citizen can own. Why are we ignoring the mental health or psychosis drug debate? It seems most killers are on prescription drugs. The Sandy Hook butcher was taking medication for mental health problems. The Aurora, CO killer took Vicodin before his killing spree. The Columbine murderer was taking anti-depressant Luvox. More than 1 in 10 Americans take anti-depressants.

The biggest scandal of all is America's culture of broken families. According to a recent study more than 7 in 10 prisoners come from broken families. Too many others grew up in dysfunctional homes. Today, 40% of all American infants are born to single parents. The real issue we need to address is not gun control, rather, it is CHARACTER CONTROL. We need to address and fix our depraved culture -- and there is only one way to do that. America needs to return back to God in deep repentance, and that repentance requires actual change.

Strange as it may be, the one thing that builds character, will also return our nation back to where it once was: a nation that truly trusts God as is boldly proclaimed on our money. There is an appointed chaplain that prays before the Senate and the House of Representatives. It is my prayer that these prayers become contagious and serious and a national spiritual revival sweeps across America. This is the only way to bring back real, lasting hope-filled change to America.
