When one reads the Pentateuch, first five books of the Old Testament, the concept is soon grasped that God hates sin and is severe on the those who persistently sin with no regards to the will of God.

The Hebrews, it seems, were constantly offering various sacrifices for their sins. There are many instructions for sacrifice through the Pentateuch, however, Leviticus, chapters 1-7 is completely dedicated to the five Levitical offerings. They describe five kinds of sacrifices: burnt offering, meal offering, peace offering, the sin offering, and the trespass offering. Each of these sacrifices were uniquely fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Those will be covered in another devotional.

The question is frequently raised, since God cannot look on sin and so strict, how does Jesus' shed blood protect me from His wrath? Actually, this is something, after we have read the Bible, have been convicted by the Holy Spirit, we have to take by faith. However, I heard a true story many years ago that explains this spiritual phenomenon remarkably.

I was very blessed to have heard Rev. Paul Smith, pastor of the famed People's Church in Toronto, Canada, relate an event that happened in Saskatchewan, Canada, in about 1962. A shepherd of a large herd of sheep experienced of having a mother ewe who lost her baby lamb. Another mother ewe died, leaving her baby lamb as an orphan. The shepherd tried introducing the surviving lamb to the ewe who had lost her baby lamb. The mother ewe rejected the poor baby lamb. In fact the ewe was rather violent with her rejection.

The shepherd was at a loss - he had a lamb who needed a mother - he had a mother who was mourning her loss and needed a baby to love. The shepherd was struck with a brilliant idea. He went out, and took the dead baby lamb and skinned him. The he carefully prepared the skin to lay it over the surviving baby lamb. The shepherd then presented the lamb to the mourning mother ewe. She smelled it and immediately accepted the surviving lamb, as it now smelled like her own baby lamb.

This is what happens when sinful man accepts Christ as Savior, he/she then wears, as it were, Christ's righteousness, and not his own. Galatians 3:27. When God in all His glory beholds one of His saints, He sees Jesus His son, instead.

"Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption." Hebrews 9:12 (NKJV)

"Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you . . ." Exodus 12:13 (NKJV)

". . . and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin." I John 1:7 (NKJV)

Amen! So come Lord Jesus! ". . . . there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Acts 4:12 (NKJV)
