This week the citizens of the United States celebrate its birthday. What should be the distinctive role of this celebration? Of course we should thank God for His countless blessings He has showered upon our land. Truly, America has been blessed beyond measure.

Of course, God, like all good Fathers, punishes His children when they misbehave. For the past few years, I think it can be correctly stated that God has been taking His children (our nation) out behind the woodshed for an occasional much needed and deserved "talking too".

Gun violence in schools, only a few short decades ago was unheard of. About 1948 when growing up on the family farm in Louisiana, our family home was destroyed in a tornado, ripping up 100 year-old Oak trees by their roots. The tornado was just wide enough to destroy our house and the log barn which was about 26 yards behind the house. In recent years tornados have been of super size, capable of destroying large portions of cities and flinging 18-wheelers around like toys. The devastation now experienced along America’s eastern seaboard is unheard of. There have always been hurricanes, but nothing like those that preoccupy the news. Forest fires are more frequent and more devastating.

On the family farm we experienced dry weather and prayed for rain, which God provided, then we thanked Him. Now there are droughts totally out of proportion to those we used to have, spreading not only in small areas of a state, but across several states.

The immoral conduct that has our nation in a vice-grip was unheard of during my youthful years; i.e. – killing of babies (abortion), gay marriage (man changing marriage from way God ordained it in the Garden), Bible and prayer illegal in schools and public places, Ten Commandments and Nativity Scenes illegal to display in public, profanity allowed in movies and TV, etc.

Today we need to do more than sing “America the Beautiful”. Those citizens, who are Christians, need to actively be “the salt of the earth”. As salt we help preserve the health of our nation; we help prevent the spread of corruption and evil. But how are we to do this? For starters, we must watch our conduct, our speech, where we go, what we do, what we laugh at. Then we need to under-line all this by having our hearts right and heads screwed on right when we go to the polls to vote. We must consider the reputation, the character, the life-style of the man or woman we vote for and forget about our pocket books. If we get everything else wrong, we just may ultimately lose our pocket book, anyway!!

Many sincere believers feel uncomfortable when it comes to taking part in governmental affairs. Primarily, I believe, this is due to a lifelong misconception of the idea of “separation of church and state”. Most Americans are unaware of the fact that the phrase “separation of church and state” is no where found in the U.S. Constitution. This is a lie fostered on to the public by the ACLU and other non-Christian and anti-American organizations. I have a copy of the Constitution which I have thoroughly read. I am convinced every American should have in their possession a copy  and read it thoroughly. If you have not read it, then you do not know what your rights are!!

The first Chief Justice, John Jay wrote: “Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.” Justice Jay was not only appointed by President Washington, he was also president of the Westchester Bible Society in 1818 and president of the American Bible Society in 1821. America has a rich history of having Founding Fathers who were deeply religious, were Christians, fervently embracing their Holy Bibles.

Few Americans know that when England cut off shipment of Bibles to the colonies during the Revolution that Bibles were imported from Holland. Also, few know that the first English Bibles printed in America were authorized by Congress!! The ACLU is totally out of order and does not know our history, and needs to be stopped to a dead stand-still in their tracks.

Having rendered unto God those things that are God’s, each must also discharge their rightful obligations to the nation and community. How desperately our nation needs the salt of Christian witness and live action! Dishonesty, greed, profanity, divorce, sexual impurity is all about us. We need to do all within our power to stay the spread of moral decay that is threatening our land. How do we do this? First we pray. Then we put feet to our prayers, if you please, by writing and calling our state and national representatives. They have no idea what you think if you do not tell them.

"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." Matthew 6:33 (NKJV) This is exactly what our Founding Fathers did. Of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, at least 50 were dedicated Christians, many having more than enough credentials for the equivalent of seminary graduate. Many were ordained ministers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Some were members of Bible Societies, others were involved with seminaries, one even put all 150 Psalms to music and others wrote Bible commentaries. Will we let them down and let their dream die?
