"Give Of Yourself"

Several years ago I had the honor of being invited to hear Joni Erickson present a testimonial speech in Cañon City, Colorado. To see and hear her was truly inspiring. She told about her first Christmas following the diving accident that left her a seventeen-year-old quadriplegic.
"One of the most depressing things was that I couldn't go out and shop for that extra-special gift for people on my list," she had recalled. "The thought that I had nothing to give left me feeling blue."
Then she remembered reading her Bible one day and coming to the realization that Christ's best gift to the world was Himself. It was then that she realized the answer to her dilemma: she would give herself. The next day she went to her physical therapy class, a chore she had previously entered into halfheartedly. But, this day she really tried to paint candy dishes with brushes placed in her mouth. Although she didn't know it then, it was the beginning of an artistic endeavor that would lead to her career.
Joni's real Christmas gift that year was her affirmation of life -- and giving herself back to her loved ones. This is something for us all to think about this Christmas.
