The story of the fierce demoniac in Mark 5:1-20, shows the power Satan and his demons can have over a human body. This man who dwelt in a cemetery was possessed with 2000 to 6000 demons, as they said to Jesus, "We are Legion". In the Roman army a commander had charge of a Legion of soldiers, which could vary from 2000 to 6000.

This man was in a hopeless situation. We in our own power, are not a match for our spiritual enemies. Only with Jesus in our hearts, do we have the power to say "No!", causing Satan to flee from us. (James 4:7)

When the Gadarenes found that their swine were lost, they had a dislike for Jesus. The man freed of the demons joyfully proclaimed what great things Jesus had done for Him. The Gadarenes, on the other hand, asked Jesus to leave.

Before leaving, Jesus answered three prayers. First, He answered the prayer of the demons, by permitting them to enter into the herd of pigs. Second, Jesus answered the prayers of the owners of the pigs by departing their area.  Third, as Jesus boarded the ship to return to Decapolis, the formerly demon possessed man asked to go with Jesus, but Jesus said, "No, go home and tell your friends the good things the Lord has done for you." Effective Christian witness begins first at home. This Gadarenian, formerly residing in a cemetery, tortured by thousands of demons, would have been as effective preaching, as was Jonah to the the people of Nineveh after he had spent three days in the belly of a great fish!!  This healed demoniac became one of the first missionary to the Gentiles.
