CHRIST'S BURIAL & RESURRECTION

           PASSES THE JONAH TEST

AFTER 3 DAYS AND 3 NIGHTS                AFTER 3 DAYS AND 3 NIGHTS
JONAH IS VOMITED ONTO               CHRIST IS RAISED FROM THE TOMB,
                              DRY LAND,                                     Matthew 12:40 & 28:6 (NKJV)
                    Jonah 1:17 & 2:10  (NKJV)

It was in the beautiful garden of Eden where life began with man being in perfect harmony with God. In the same garden the curse of death found its first prey because of Adam's transgression. In another beautiful garden, the sufferings of Christ's atonement began. Such strange mingling of opposites. On the one hand a beautiful garden of life; on the other hand, a garden in which is corruption and decay with a tomb. What a strange world.  How many gardens have a grave site? Our path may for a time be through flowers and fragrance, but follow it far enough, it leads to a grave.
The reality of our Lord's death was attested by the two most competent to decide, and certainly free from all bias in full reliance on the testimony of two whose testimony Pilate surrendered His body. The dead Redeemer delivered out of the hands of His enemies and committed by the supreme political authority to His friends, thereby protected from all further indignities.
All four writers of the Gospel accounts give particular and minute account of the Lord's honorable burial. Two times Jesus was rich in the days of His poverty: ONCE, immediately after His birth, when the wise men from the East gave Him gold, frankincense and myrrh; and SECOND, after His humiliating death, when a rich man buries him, and a distinguished man anoints him with precious spices, a rich Joseph has taken the place of the poor carpenter Joseph, who stood by the manger, and costly linen bust be the swathing bands in which is unwrapped His body, now ripe for glorification.
Very few, even of the friends of Christ, were there. The Son of God is tasting death for every man, woman and child. Where are the streets crowded with people? Where are the chariots of state and train of nobles? A more obscure and neglected burial has seldom taken place.
It is to be noted that where Jesus was buried was a new tomb, in which had never any man been laid, (John 19:41) adequately proving that none other than Jesus could have risen from it. Further, the tomb was cut out of rock, (Matthew 27:60) showing there was no other passage by which the disciples could get past the guards and slip away His body.
Death did not survive the death blow by our Redeemer. Death could not retain it's grasp on His body one moment longer than the soul of Christ was willing that it should. The apostle Paul declared, "For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living." Romans 14:9 (NKJV).     As J. Glentworth Butler, D.D. so aptly expressed it, "YES, OUR BLESSINGS REST UPON THE 'HOLY GRAVE,' WHICH SANCTIFIES OUR GRAVES!"
As we continue reading scripture we come to Matthew 28:1, we read, "Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn . . . ." I take scripture very seriously. Early in Matthew we read, "For as Jonah was THREE DAYS and THREE NIGHTS in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be THREE DAYS and THREE NIGHTS in the heart of the earth." 12:39 (NKJV).
God does not play with words. He expresses Himself in words we can understand without having to strain or twist scripture. As in the days of Joshua, he needed more daylight to be able to conquer the enemy so he prayed to God for the sun to stand still. Joshua 10:12-14. God answered Joshua's prayer. In verse 13b we read, ". . . so the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for ABOUT a whole day." Can this be any clearer? Most people referring to the sun standing still for Joshua will say "for a day", which is incorrect, as scripture says "ABOUT A WHOLE DAY." God created the heavens and the earth in six days, not ABOUT six days. Christ was tested in the wilderness for 40 days, not ABOUT 40 days. There are other examples, but these are sufficient for the rational mind. Christ was in the tomb for "THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS",?? not "ABOUT" or "ALMOST".
Matthew and Luke and John adds clarifications to Christ's time in the tomb.

FIRST                 "NOW WHEN THE SABBATH WAS PAST, MARY MAGDALENE, MARY THE MOTHER OF JAMES, AND SALOME BOUGHT SPICES, THAT THEY MIGHT COME AND ANOINT HIM."         Mark 16:1 (NKJV)
SECOND:           "THAT WAS THE PREPARATION, AND THE SABBATH DREW NEAR. AND THE WOMEN WHO HAD COME ??WITH HIM FROM GALILEE FOLLOWED AFTER, AND THEY OBSERVED THE TOMB AND HOW HIS ??BODY WAS LAID. THEN THEY RETURNED AND PREPARED SPICES AND FRAGRANT OILS. AND ??THEY RESTED ON THE SABBATH ACCORDING TO THE COMMANDMENT. "      Luke 23: 54-56. (NKJV).

THIRD:                   "NOW IT WAS PREPARATION DAY FOR THE PASSOVER, . . . "
                                 John 19:14 (NKJV).
"THEREFORE, BECAUSE IT WAS THE PREPARATION DAY, THAT THE BODIES SHOULD NOT REMAIN ON THE CROSS ON THE SABBATH (FOR THAT SABBATH WAS A HIGH DAY) John 19:31 NKJV)??
Please note, in Matthew that the women bought spices AFTER they had rested on the Sabbath. This was the weekly Saturday Sabbath. Now, please follow me on this.
In Luke they FIRST PREPARED and then RESTED ON THE SABBATH. This was the ANNUAL Passover Sabbath.

Please note that John calls the day following PREPARATION DAY OF THE PASSOVER in John 19:14, then in vs 31, he called it the SABBATH, while describing it as a HIGH DAY. King James Version calls it a SPECIAL DAY.
As mentioned earlier, I take scripture VERY SERIOUSLY.  Revelation and DANIEL are books or writings that very extensively use symbols. The Gospel accounts are not symbolic. In some cases there will be a HYPERBOLE, and when referring to Herod, Jesus said, "GO TELL THAT FOX . . .". Matthew 13:32a.   In Matthew 12:39, Matthew was NOT making use of a hyperbole nor a symbol. It was actually THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS.
